Once Upon a Time in Wonderland Appreciation Week (Day 3: August 19th)
Day 3: Favorite Non-Romantic Pairing
As much as I was looking forward to the amazing (and untapped) potential of Anastasia and Cyrus, I think my favorite non-romantic pairing has got to be Will and Alice - partially because it’s one of the few friendships that I think got truly fleshed out.
I applaud the OUATIW writers so much for how they handled Will and Alice’s relationship. Because they could have so easily created a love triangle between Will, Alice, and Cyrus, but they didn’t. They made it incredibly clear over the course of the show that Alice and Will were very close friends - family even - but that they were nothing more or less than that and they never would be.
Female/Male friendships that don’t develop into love stories seem so rare on TV nowadays. (Having friendship as a basis for a relationship is great, but every now and then it’s nice to see friends just be friends.) So, it was just so great to watch these two people care about each other so deeply and completely without any hint of romance.
Will and Alice fight and argue and get under each other’s skin, but at the end of the day, they love each other in this pure and simple way that is just so refreshing to see between two friends in a mainstream television show.
In the end, I think the dynamic between Will and Alice isn’t only amazing to watch but also a super important message to other writers about what to do instead of a love triangle when it comes to having a female character who has a close relationship with two different male characters.
(By the way, I’ve talked about this before - in this post - if you’d care to read more of my thoughts on how important Will and Alice’s platonic relationship is.)
